SPEAKERSHIP IS LEADERSHIP

Ready or not…when we speak, we lead. If we are unprepared, we have led listeners into discomfort, wondering if their time has been misspent.

When we speak with authentic connection while giving value, we have the opportunity and even the responsibility to lead our audience to their next best step, and the inspiration to act.

Working with Margaret helped me to interact more effectively with clients, colleagues, and even family members, in large part by understanding the neuroscience behind how we learn, listen, and resonate with others (especially those who don’t share our values or perspectives).

As a Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Consultant, I came to Margaret looking for advice on navigating challenging conversations with corporate leaders, and telling compelling stories with data. Margaret is able to adapt in real time and is an incredible listener. She offers the right guidance as needed; while she spent plenty of time asking questions to help me arrive somewhere independently, at times she would explicitly move us ahead by turning on consultant mode and giving me the resources I needed.

I highly recommend Margaret’s approach for anyone looking to communicate more effectively – the applications of this kind of coaching are endless and the impact goes far beyond the workplace.

“Speakership is Leadership” is a mindset that has served to elevate my idea of myself and how I show up in the world. I joined Margaret’s Speakership Collective community as my first dip into public speaking. Impressed by the providings and how Margaret managed the community, I decided to work with Margaret as my 1:1 speaking coach. I have been supported, engaged and provided learning opportunities at every step. Margaret offers a sense of dedication and empathetic listening that’s hard to find. Her approach to speaker training always culminated in actionable advice — worksheets, personal exercises, live practice — that, when applied, took me to the next level in my speakership and confidence. Speakership is leadership, and Margaret is a pro that walks the talk. I recommend Margaret as a speaking coach and an exceptional professional.

Over the last few months I’ve been working with Margaret through her Leadership Communication Coaching course.  I knew that there was something that could be improved in my business and I believed that effective communication was it.  I wasn’t terrible at communicating with my team, but I thought it could at least be improved. So I started working with Margaret and it was amazing how quickly the changes began.  The tools that she gave me not only improved communication from myself to my team, but also from my team to me.  In addition to that, people outside of my organization seem to be drawn to these changes as well.  Many times we look for the next opportunity to invest in our businesses without realizing that the best investment may be into ourselves first.  This has, by far, been the best investment I have ever made for myself and my business.  Thank you Margaret!!

Working with Margaret on my speaker journey was one of the best investments I have made. Margaret and I worked together for a year and in that time I went from being a confident but unpolished speaker to a confident, polished speaker with 2 fully complete keynotes. My sessions with Margaret helped me develop my content and learn how to listen. My speakership journey covered my personal and professional life and the skills I learned will last a lifetime. Margaret is a wonderful coach!

Margaret has been and is a gift in my life, one of those people who changes you, who sees you, and who helps you see your own potential and ability.

I met Margaret at a pivotal point in my life, and she helped me achieve a goal that was so meaningful and impactful that it is difficult to encapsulate in words. Because of Margaret, I felt capable of accomplishing the goal of speaking in front of a TEDx audience about a topic that was intimate and important to me. Her involvement, encouragement, and coaching allowed me to distill my story and my experience into a compelling, clear, yet also vulnerable piece of work.

Margaret’s love for coaching people to share their gifts in their fullest, most vibrant, truest form shined from her face from the moment I met her, and throughout my experience with her. Even during times when my self-doubt threatened to make me quit the whole endeavor, Margaret was steady, and firm, while also soft, and loving.

Margaret has a gift. Her ability to connect to the human part of you, while coaxing out your abilities, is unmatched by anyone else I have ever met.
I would be honored to work with Margaret again, and look forward to doing so someday, for some things are just meant to be.

FAQ About Coaching

“If something comes from your heart, it will reach the heart of your audience.”

— فوزیه کوفی (Fawzia Koofi)‎

Actually, my undergraduate degree was in music with a full scholarship in cello performance at the University of Arizona, but I had shaking anxiety on the stage. After graduation, I essentially quit performing. Some years later, I eased this discomfort when I discovered that presenting is not about accuracy, but about generously connecting with and giving to the audience.

I had many delightful experiences with performing, but chose to dive deep into teaching and studied a communication philosophy from Japan with master teachers for hundreds of hours. Interestingly, our time together was only partially focused on cello technique, but mostly aimed at communication and connection with the students and groups we were shepherding.

I ventured into Communications in 2012 and started to coach speakers for TEDxSaltLakeCity in 2014. I quickly found there were many overlaps between the skills I had been honing as a teacher and public speaking. How do you establish a connection with your audience? Can you keep a vision in your head of where you want the listener to be? Can you offer single steps to guide them towards your vision?

I continued this development in communications through my work in the Master of Strategic Communication program at Westminster College in Salt Lake City, coaching speakers in over a dozen TEDx events internationally, and training with the NeuroLeadership Institute.

My clients are managers, entrepreneurs, storytellers, CEO’s, researchers, and thinkers who are devoted to their projects and realize that speaking well is an essential part of the development of themselves and their projects.

Clients who already have experience in their field, are purpose-driven, and growth-minded are a great match with me.

Every time I meet with a new speaker-leader I get to dive into a new idea, a new system, and often a new field. This means that there are many many fields I have already worked with, and have the flexibility for new ones!

An essential part of my groups are the wide range of industries represented. Some of the fields include finance, neurology, climate science, performance art, history, cannabis, medical, tech, history, psychology, Agile systems, AI, construction, customer service, and more.

My one-to-one clients tend to be entrepreneurs, or in medical or tech.

I see there are many speaking coaches, and there are many executive coaches, but there are very few leadership communication coaches.

Coaching over 100 TEDx presenters + training from the NeuroLeadership Institute + thousands of hours of experience facilitating safe, creative, productive groups = Unique experience

My coaching programs are created for people who are ready and serious to grow their leadership speaking skills. Our sessions will dive deep into honing their message, understanding the gifts they are giving to the audience, and practicing delivery for results.

Understand that I am selective about whom I invest my time and I cherry-pick my clients. I have gently chosen to turn away people I see aren’t ready to dive into the work I ask of them.

My programs are not a great match for people who are not already experienced with their topics, or who don’t know what they want to do or how they want to grow. My clients have projects in action, a vision of where they are going, and are ready to hone their communication skills for the next step.

Developing your speaking habit is a marathon, not a sprint.

Yes! After clients have successfully completed one set of speaking goals, they often find that there are more speaking invitations coming their way, a higher level of leadership being offered, and they want to keep upgrading their skills.

For leaders in organizations, once they see the benefits of working with me, they often want similar results for their team members as well.

Some clients think of me as their ongoing secret weapon.

If you can even spare one hour a week you will be able to take one step a week!

Know that this approach will take longer than if you throw yourself into it wholeheartedly, but if you don’t ever start, you will never get there.

They say every journey starts with a single step and I know, personally, that I’d rather fail miserably at something I tried than never have given myself the chance to succeed.

YES! First, take the Speakership Quiz to understand and focus on your own speaking strengths and growth opportunities.

Great!

Did you know that one of the most prominent characteristics of successful people is that successful people take action? They take educated risks. Yes, they make a mistake (we all do), but overwhelmingly, they are decisive and they take action. It’s a well-known fact that these people make decisions based on their gut instinct.

So, that being said, since this feels right for you, let’s go for it!
